Safety is the first consideration when operating any type of machinery.  This is especially true when using a horizontal milling machine.  There are actually two types of milling machines – horizontal and vertical.  But with the horizontal type, you will be using overhead arm supports and cutters that are arbor driven.  This means that special precautions must be used to assure that safety is your first consideration. You want to avoid any injuries while you are using the machine and, at the same time, keep everything running smoothly and efficiently. The cutting tool on any milling machine must always be sharp and free from debris.  This makes the tool less dangerous.  In addition, dull cutters cost much more because the cutting edges must work harder to get the job done.  If the cutting edge is dull, heat builds up and the cutter is likely to break as the edges become worn.  The final product is less desirable because poor quality surfaces will result.  You also will use more power to run your milling machine using a dull cutter.  Overall, your machine will not be efficient or safe for you to use.
