We’ve just bought a house and it’s almost the time of year to start cutting the grass, and I’m wondering what kind of lawn mower I should be buying. It’s not a big yard, so a riding mower is out, but I don’t know whether to get gas or electric. Gas seems like it would be less hassle, with no cord to worry about cutting, but I’ve always heard they’re prone to problems and hard to start. I’d love some feedback from someone who has some experience here, especially if you can recommend any specific brands or models to get me start on my search.
My opinion is you should buy a push mower – yes, an old-fashioned rotary push mower. No gas or electrical cords to worry about and you’ll get a good workout every time you cut the lawn.
Why not rent a couple of different models at your local rental shop to see what you like better? The cost of renting will be offset by not buying a mower that you’re not happy with.
I bought a Craftsman gas mower at Sears and it’s worked great for several years now. It’s got an electric starter on it, so I don’t have to yank on the cord to fire it up. I do have to remember to plug it in every few weeks to keep the battery charged for the starter, but it’s not a big deal.
Forget buying a mower entirely. Just find a neighborhood kid that’s willing to cut your lawn for ten bucks, and you won’t have to worry about what type to buy, maintenance, or even leaving your house
I picked up a cordless electric lawnmower when I had to buy a new one a year or so ago. It works great for our fairly small yard, and there’s no cord to worry about OR gas to buy. If you don’t have a lot of space to deal with, I’d say try a cordless.
I use an electric mower, but our yard is so small (townhouse) that it isn’t really an issue. If I had much more space to cover, I’d probably have gone with a gas mower instead.
I’ll second the vote for gas. It’s a lot easier than having to drag around a cord all the time. Just make sure you don’t forget to have gas on hand in case you run out in the middle of the lawn
We’ve got a gas mower, and I would never go back to an electric one. Our mower starts easily every time – I think the idea of gas mowers being hard to start is a thing of the past. Not having to worry about where the extension cord is every time I turn a corner makes it so much easier to cut the lawn. Go with gas.
