Carp are very versatile, and can live in a great variety of habitats including highly degraded areas, along with many of their cyprinid relatives, are popular ornamental aquarium and pond fish. Fishing for Carp in other countries is also a popular pastime. Asian carp, an invasive species whose population dramatically expanded after the 1993 floods. Grass carp are fish imported from Asia for use in controlling aquatic vegetation. Bighead carp first began to appear in open public waters in the early 1980’s, likely the result of escapement from culture facilities. Black carp, which look remarkably like grass carp but with darker fins, primarily eat mollusks such as snails. The Common carp are extremely popular with anglers in many parts of Europe, and their popularity as quarry is slowly increasing among anglers in the United States (though destroyed as pests in many areas), and southern Canada. Carp are both bottom and surface feeders, and consume a variety of plant and animal tissue from mollusks to mulberries.
