Keyword research is basically what the name implies.
It is researching and gathering specific information and data about the words or phrases people surfing the internet are typing into the search engines i,e, Google, Yahoo, MSN…etc, about any particular subject.
Depending on what tool you use for conducting your keyword research, the results you will get back are usually based on…
- the traffic numbers or the amount of people using a specific search query or phrase
- the amount of competing websites that already have information about the particular phrase
- and what the specific time frame the data is collected in, for example, the number of people using a particular phrase in a week, month, or yearly period.
You could say that keyword research is customer research.
There are many opinions and strategies regarding keyword research.
It is my opinion that you should perform keyword research for every peice of web content you create.
I also recomend utilising keyword research when setting up and building your website, i,e, what you should name your website, catergories and subcatergories.
There are many free tools online to carry out your keyword research campaigns, use these before committing to building your site. If you are going into a small niche market you want to see if you have a sufficient market online already to tap into.
My favorite free keyword tool is the Google Keyword Tool.
