What is the difference between a post and a page?
Pages
Pages are usually used for content that can not be easily placed into a larger group, category or cluster of information.
A good use of a page instead of a post, would be if you wanted to hide content on your site, For example if you have your auto responder set to send your visitors to a page on your site with the to download link of your free report, you would want to make sure that the download page cannot be easily found and it is hidden, or else why would they bother giving you their email address.
Another good use of a page would be, if you wanted your site to look like a website and not a blog, you would then have a landing page where your visitor is immediately exposed to a full page spread asking them to download your free report.
(this would only be the case if you do not want your latest “posts” displayed on your landing page)
You should only use a page for random pieces of content that you either want to hide or that can not be placed in a larger group of similar content.(i.e. a contact us page, about us page etc…)
A page could also be described as being a static part of your website.
Your pages don’t have any tags associated to the relevant content, making them less valuable for your SEO efforts. (notice I said less)
Posts
A post is a small piece of information that is about a much larger subject or topic.
The idea of having a well structured site is to make sure that your Posts are tightly grouped into categories about specific subjects.
When viewing your posts you will, by default always see them listed in the order of when they were published, with the latest content always being shown at the top of it’s category.
A good example of using posts would be, If you wanted to build a site about musical instruments you would set up multiple categories, one of them could be about guitars.
The different pieces of information you have about guitars would then go on separate posts.ie, How to tune a guitar, what is a guitar, what to look for when buying a guitar etc…
So whenever you had a new piece of information about guitars you would write it on a new post and put it in the guitar categry, you could say that you are creating a website within a website.
The other benefit of using posts in categories is the additional keywords that you have in your URLs.
Your posts can be found in many ways on your site where pages can not, you can locate your posts in your categories, archives, and site-map.
Your visitors can also have your posts delivered to them via an RSS reader ( another “What Is” post
